What is a charter school you may ask? Charter Schools are independent public schools authorized by the NC Gerneral Assembly in 1996. Unlike traditional public schools that are managed and funded by county school boards. Charter public schools are governed by an independent Board of Directors. They receive the same Average Daily Attendance (ADM) per-student funding as traditional public schools, but receive it directly from the state rather than through a county school board. They do receive some funds from local county sources, but must provide their own physical facilities without county funds or independent taxing authority to provide them.
Charter Schools are more flexible than regular public schools. Their enrollment is open to all students with no discrimination or religious associations, and at absolutely no cost to students or their families. All children in the state have the right to attend a Charter public school of their choice, and the local school board cannot prevent any child from attending.
The new Charter School will be located on "Island Creek Rd" just off Highway 9 in Lake Lure. This location will serve children from Rutherford, Polk, Henderson and Buncombe Counties just as the original Lake Lure School did. By serving a multi-county area we will have enough children to make the Lake Lure school work. This makes a Charter School the ideal solution for the Lake Lure area. source: The Mountain Breeze News www.mountainbreezenews.com
